Hoa Lo prison - Hell on earth. They said that this prison built by the French in Ha Noi is the biggest and strongest. In spite of the harsh regime, cruel toture of jailers, the political prisoners were always loyal to their ideals, and bravely dedicated their life to the cause of national liberation. 

The prisoners continued joining in the revolutionary fighting movement after escape from there in spite of having many more difficulties and hardships.

The Party, the State, and, especially, the Youth, always remember that the older generations laid down their life for the motherland. Out of respect for that, the young generations must work hard to contribute to the cause of building the country which is peaceful, democratic and  civilized.

Room displaying nameplates of 1651 patriotic and revolutionary fighters held by French colonist in Hoa Lo Prison from 1899 - 1954.

Before 1930: registered 110 prisoners

From 1930 - 1945: registered 607 prisoners

From 1946 - 1954: registered 872 prisoners

In addition, 62 unidentified revolutionaries regarding whom there is no information about name, hometown, or years interned.

 

 Memorial monument

 

Memorial monument was inaugurated in 2000, anniversary 990 years of Thang Long - Ha Noi. 

With square about 200m2, Memorial monument is the place for worshiping and installation ceremonies for Party as the contribution from new generations to the sacrificing of heroes and revolutionaries.

Main material for Memorial monument is granite, with 2 colors are black and red. Images were carved on black wall in Memorial monument are about imprisoned patriots and revolutionaries. Red symbolizes for blood, undauntedness spirits.

The contribution from patriots and revolutionaries in Hoa Lo prison was memorialized with words: “Undaunted loyalty - Forever glory”.
